For 35 years I trained in various martial arts, last testing for sixth degree black belt in Moogong-ryu at the Oriental Martial Arts College (OMAC) in 2007 with Joon Pyo Choi, my teacher and mentor for over 25 years. I served as Education Chair for OMAC, as well as a member of the Rank Promotion Committee.
During the 80’s and 90’s I had a relentless pursuit of perfecting my art through competitive taekwondo. Some of the highlights of those days of intense physical training were a collegiate national silver medal, a bronze medal at the Mexico City International Festival as well as silver medal at the World Taekwondo Festival in Korea.
I opened my first martial arts school in 1988 and was fortunate to train-up junior, collegiate, and seniorlevelnational medalists. Cincinnati Taekwondo Center grew into one of the largest schools in the region. Developing innovative ways to teach age-specific martial art classes, I began teaching instructors internationally. I was involved as an officer and tournament director for the Ohio State Taekwondo Association for many years.
In 1990, I graduated from Xavier University with an education degree that focused on sports science, learning theory, as well as athletic training. I continued that pursuit with additional coursework in education, sports psychology, nutrition, and a 1600 certification in the Alexander Technique to help students re-educate their postural system.
Besides having a curiosity of other fighting arts, I saw that each style had specific strengths and short-comings in both physical techniques and learning systems. In addition to studying taekwondo at OMAC, I trained in Shotokan karate, northern shaolin Kungfu, Gumdo, and Kimoodo. I also studied extensively Muay Thai, Aikido, Karate, Brazilian jiujitsu, western boxing, armed force CQC, Krav Maga (National Krav Maga Center in La in 1999), Kelly McCann (Fredericksburg, VA in 2013 & 2016), as well as being part of the Tactical Defense Institute’s training first training for school teachers dealing with active shooters.
I have been blessed to have worked with such a diverse group of students! Students from grade school-age children to retired executives, from the developmentally disabled to elite athletes, from high-schoolers getting ready to go off to college to doormen and security personnel, from small home school group learning bully defense to a large company working active shooter defense.
In 2013, I decided to sell Cincinnati Taekwondo Center and develop a new way of teaching students to survive the fight they did not ask for and fight the small battles we encounter in our lives each day. This new format, truer to my Christian faith, is rooted in this verse from scripture: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) It aligns itself better to our culture’s hectic lifestyle, teaching only the most important skills for survival, and offers formats specific to each group’s needs. TrueDefense foremost offers truth in training. We are constantly studying and adapting techniques and training methods to give the best possible outcomes to our students.
I reside in Cincinnati and enjoy getting a chance to teach with my wife, Tamara, who has her 2nd degree black belt. I have a son and two step-children, and when we can we very much enjoy hiking together!
